Poems for Now

Poems for Now grew around the creation and publication of At the War Memorial, a Remembrance Day poem published by University of Toronto Magazine. The poetry collection has a definite Canadian perspective but also tries to sound a contemporary note in experiences that many of us have shared.

A full website written to promote the launch of Poems for Now can be viewed at www.brittaelmberg.wix.com/poemsfornow. In this site you will find many photos, graphics and text which were created to serve as a background to this work.

Poetry is somewhat like my other great past-time: painting.  Many similarities between the two forms exist.  however, in purely language terms, I like the way poetry can compress an experience or image and evoke much with an economy of means: in other words a lot said with few words spoken.

Poetry is often seen as a difficult literary form, usually met with groans or sighs, probably a

throwback to tedious English classes in High School and University in which poetry was literally dissected; unfortunately, the appreciation of beautiful language was also subjected to the dissection scalpel! I believe that a lot of the current instruction, particulary in making text to self, text to text and text to world connections is a lot more relevant and fosters further discussion.
